About Ward
PROFILE
A graduate of the Internationally renowned jazz program of Millikin University and the US Navy School of Music, Mr. Durrett currently performs with noted Colorado pianists Gary Dempsey and Ray Young. He has shared the stage with pianist Chuck Lamb, singer Carol Lawrence, band leaders Bob Crosby, Ray Eberly, Les Elgart and Ray McKinley, entertainer Sheri Lewis, accordionist Myron Floren, Al Pierson (the Guy Lombardo Orchestra) and Denver Big Band legend Dean Bushnell. In December of 2000, Ward was the first percussionist to be inducted into the Winter Guard International Hall of Fame in recognition of his pioneering efforts in the development of the WGI indoor competitive percussion activity. He served as both Percussion Coordinator and Chief Judge for WGI and still contributes to the activity as a consultant and member of the WGI Percussion administrative team. In the fall of 2003, Mr. Durrett directed the development of the specialized electronics utilized by the The Stampede, the Drumline of the Denver Broncos, and the first official drumline of the National Football League.

INNOVATION
In December of 1980, Ward conceived of and facilitated the 1st Spartan Marching Percussion Festival at Glenbrook North HS in Northbrook Illinois, the Festival that launched what is now known nationwide as the Indoor Competitive Percussion Activity. Within this activity, Ward directed the ongoing Spartan Festival for 14 years until 1993; was the Founder and Director of the Percussive Arts Society International Convention Marching Percussion Forum (1982 through 1986); served as Coordinator of the Bands of America Marching Percussion Festival (1989 through 1995); was the 1st WGI Percussion Coordinator (1993 through 1996); served as WGI Percussion Chief Judge (1998 through 2001) and has assisted the WGI Percussion activity as Percussion Administrator since 2002. In December of 2000, Ward was the 1st percussionist inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame in recognition of his service to and influence on the Indoor Competitive Percussion Activity.

Adjudicator
Ward has been an active and sought after adjudicator since 1978 in the competitive marching arena as well as in a wealth of marching and concert percussion settings. His affiliations include WGI, DCI, BOA, Rocky Mountain Percussion Asociation, Drum Corps Midwest, Central States Judges Association and the Colorado Bandmasters Judges Association.having served as Chief Judge for the State of Colorado for over 5 years. Ward has also served as Chief Judge for the Rocky Mtn Percussion Association since 2001.
Educator / Arranger
Ward has been actively involved in the marching percussion arena since 1971, assisting with the drumlines of the 1972 Guardsmen and 1975 Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps’ (while serving with the U.S. Navy Band at the Great Lakes Naval Station north of Chicago), as well as supervising and arranging for numerous marching band percussion programs, including Monticello HS (Ill), 1978 Bands of America Class A Summer National Champion; J.B. Conant HS (Ill), 1980 Bands of America Summer National Champion; Winnetonka HS (MO), Missouri State Champions; Glenbrook North HS (Ill), Illinois State Champions; Marian Catholic HS (Ill), 1984-1988 BOA Summer National Champions and 1985, 1987, 1988 & 1989 BOA Grand National Champions. Since that time Ward served as marching percussion instructor and arranger at the University of Northern Colorado from 1999 through 2007.
Ward is currently an affiliate faculty member at the Colorado Christian University School of Music and directs the percussion program at Rampart High School in Colorado Springs.
